Zimbabwe: about the flag

Zimbabwe's flag was designed by a committee led by Richard Hove, the Minister of Public Works, for the country's independence celebrations in 1980. The design was influenced by Flight Lieutenant Cedric Herbert, a member of the Rhodesian Heraldry and Genealogy Society.

The flag has seven horizontal stripes of green, yellow, red, black, red, yellow, and green. A white triangle at the hoist contains a red five-pointed star and the Zimbabwe Bird, a soapstone statuette found at the ruins of Great Zimbabwe. The bird is the national symbol of Zimbabwe and appears on the flag of the ruling party. Green stands for agriculture, yellow for mineral wealth, red for the blood shed during the wars of liberation, and black for the heritage of the African people.

The flag was adopted on 18 April 1980, the day Zimbabwe gained independence from Britain.
