Zambia: about the flag

Zambia's flag was designed by Gabriel Ellison, an artist who also created the country's coat of arms and many of its postage stamps. She placed the eagle and stripes at the fly, an unusual choice, because most flags put their emblems in the center or at the hoist.

The green field stands for Zambia's agriculture and lush vegetation. The orange eagle in flight represents the nation's ability to rise above its problems. The three vertical stripes are red for the struggle for freedom, black for the Zambian people and all black Africans, and orange for the country's mineral wealth and copper. The eagle is the African fish eagle, a common sight near Zambia's rivers and lakes.

The flag was adopted on 24 October 1964, the day Zambia became independent from Britain. It was slightly modified in 1996, when the green field was made a darker shade.
