Yemen: about the flag

Yemen's flag was designed to be simple. When North and South Yemen united in 1990, the two governments decided to drop the distinctive emblems from their separate flags and keep only the shared red, white, and black stripes.

North Yemen's flag had a green star in the center. South Yemen's flag had a light blue triangle with a red star. After unification, both were removed. The red stripe stands for the blood of the struggle for independence. The white represents a bright future. The black recalls the dark days of the past. The design is based on the Arab Liberation Flag used by the United Arab Republic.

The flag was adopted on 22 May 1990, the day the Republic of Yemen was proclaimed. It is flown on government buildings and at official events across the country.
