Western Sahara: about the flag
Western Sahara's flag was designed by El Ouali, the founder of the Polisario Front, for the independence proclamation on 27 February 1976. He admired the Palestinian flag and added a red star and crescent to the white stripe.
The flag uses the Pan-Arab colors: black, white, and green. Black stands for death and colonialism, white for peace and hope, and green for life and wealth. The red triangle at the hoist represents the blood of martyrs, and the red star and crescent are symbols of Islam. The flag is similar to the Palestinian flag but with the addition of the Islamic symbols.
The flag is used by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which controls part of the territory. Morocco, which claims the whole region, uses its own flag. The flag was adopted on 27 February 1976, the day the SADR was proclaimed.
