Wales: about the flag

Wales has one of the oldest national symbols in Europe: a red dragon that has been associated with the country since at least the 9th century. The Historia Brittonum, written around 828, tells of a red dragon representing the Celtic Britons and a white dragon representing the Anglo-Saxons.

The dragon was used by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, and it was carried in state to St Paul's Cathedral after his victory. The green and white field comes from the Tudor family, the Welsh dynasty that sat on the English throne. The flag was officially recognised as the national flag of Wales in 1959.

Unlike the flags of Scotland and England, the Welsh flag does not appear on the Union Jack. Wales celebrates St David's Day on 1 March, and the red dragon is flown at sporting events and on government buildings.
