Vietnam: about the flag

Vietnam's flag was designed by a revolutionary who never lived to see it become the national symbol. Nguyễn Hữu Tiến sketched the red banner with a gold star in 1940, for an uprising against French colonial rule. He was arrested and executed before the revolt even began.

The red field stands for revolution and the blood shed for independence. The golden star represents the soul of the nation. Its five points symbolize the five main classes of Vietnamese society: intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and soldiers. The flag was first used during the Cochinchina uprising in 1940, and it was officially adopted by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on 30 November 1955.

After the country was reunified in 1976, the same flag became the national flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It is flown on government buildings and at schools across the country.
