Venezuela: about the flag

Venezuela's flag has carried eight stars since 2006, but the original design had none. The arc of white stars on the blue band was added over a century after the flag was first raised.

The tricolor of yellow, blue, and red was created by Francisco de Miranda, a Venezuelan revolutionary who dreamed of uniting Latin America. He flew it for the first time in 1806 during an unsuccessful expedition to liberate his homeland. The yellow band stands for the country's wealth, the blue for the sea that separates Venezuela from Spain, and the red for the blood shed in the fight for independence. The eight stars represent the eight provinces that signed the declaration of independence in 1811.

The flag was officially adopted on 12 March 2006, when a star was added to represent the province of Guayana. Venezuela celebrates Flag Day on 3 August, the date Miranda first raised his banner on Venezuelan soil.
