Vatican City: about the flag

Vatican City's flag is a square, one of the few national flags that is not rectangular. It is divided into yellow and white vertical bands, with the papal coat of arms in the white half. The arms show crossed keys—one gold, one silver—bound by a red cord and topped by the papal tiara.

The yellow and white colors date from 1808, when Pope Pius VII gave them to his Noble Guard. The flag itself was adopted in 1929, when the Lateran Treaty created the Vatican City State. The keys represent St Peter, who was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

The flag was first hoisted on 8 June 1929. It is used by the Holy See and by Vatican City, and it flies over St Peter's Basilica.
