Vanuatu: about the flag

Vanuatu's flag was designed by local artist Kalontas Malon and adopted on 18 February 1980, just months before independence. The design was based on the flag of the Vanua'aku Party, which led the country to independence.

The flag has a Y-shaped golden pall that represents the islands' position on a map and the light of the gospel in the Pacific. Two crossed namele cycad fronds sit inside a boar tusk on the left side. The green field stands for the richness of the islands, red for the blood that unites humanity, and black for the Melanesian people. A parliamentary committee chose the final design from submissions by local artists.

The flag was first raised on Independence Day, 30 July 1980, and has flown unchanged since. It is flown on government buildings and at sporting events.
