U.S. Virgin Islands: about the flag

The United States Virgin Islands flag was authorized by the territorial governor on 17 May 1921. It shows a simplified version of the U.S. coat of arms between the letters V and I.

The flag's design was intended to reflect the islands' relationship with the United States. The eagle in the coat of arms holds an olive branch in one talon and three arrows in the other. The three arrows represent the three main islands: Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas. The blue, white, and red colors come from the U.S. flag.

Before the islands were purchased by the United States in 1917, they were a Danish colony and flew the Danish flag. The current flag has been in use since 1921.
