Uruguay: about the flag

Uruguay's flag has nine horizontal stripes of white and blue, but the first version had 19. The number was reduced in 1830 because the stripes were hard to see from a distance.

The flag was designed by Joaquín Suárez, a politician who later became president. It was first adopted by law on 18 December 1828, just after Uruguay gained independence from Brazil. The nine stripes represent the nine original departments of the country. The Sun of May in the canton recalls the May Revolution of 1810, which began the independence movement.

The flag was modified on 11 July 1830, when the number of stripes was reduced to nine. It is officially called the National Pavilion and is flown on government buildings and at sporting events.
