United States: about the flag
The United States flag has changed 27 times since it was first adopted. The original 1777 design had 13 stars and 13 stripes, one for each of the original colonies. The last change came on 4 July 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state and a 50th star was added.
The flag was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress on 14 June 1777. The colors carry no official meanings, but they are traditionally said to stand for valor (red), purity (white), and justice (blue). The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, and the stars represent the current states.
Flag Day is celebrated on 14 June. The flag is also called the Stars and Stripes or Old Glory.
