United Arab Emirates: about the flag

The United Arab Emirates flag was designed by a 19-year-old student, Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, who won a nationwide competition in 1971. He didn't learn his design had been chosen until he saw it raised on a flagpole.

The flag has a red vertical band at the hoist and three horizontal stripes of green, white, and black. These are the Pan-Arab colors, representing the sovereignty and unity of Arab states. Green is for fertility, white for peace, black for the defeat of enemies, and red for courage and the blood of those who fought for freedom.

The flag was first raised on 2 December 1971, the day the UAE was founded. It is flown on government buildings and at all official events, and the same design is used by all seven emirates.
