Ukraine: about the flag

Ukraine's flag is a simple bicolor of blue and yellow, but its history is anything but simple. The colors were first used during the 1848 revolution in Lviv, when Ukrainian activists adopted them as a national symbol.

The blue band stands for the sky and peace, and the yellow for fields of wheat and prosperity. The flag was officially adopted by the Ukrainian People's Republic on 22 March 1918, but it was banned when Ukraine became part of the Soviet Union. The Soviet flag replaced it for decades.

When the Soviet Union dissolved, the blue and yellow flag returned. It was officially restored on 28 January 1992 by the Ukrainian parliament. Ukraine celebrates the Day of the National Flag on 23 August, and the flag has become a powerful symbol of resistance since the 2022 Russian invasion.
