Tuvalu: about the flag

Tuvalu's flag is a light blue ensign with nine yellow stars that map the islands' true positions in the Pacific. The stars are arranged geographically, with east at the top and north to the left, making the flag a small atlas of the nation.

The flag was designed by Vione Natano, who won a competition held before independence. It was first adopted on 1 October 1978, the day Tuvalu became independent from Britain. The light blue field stands for the ocean that surrounds the nine islands. The Union Jack in the canton reflects the country's British heritage and its membership in the Commonwealth.

In 1995, Tuvalu replaced the flag with a new design that dropped the Union Jack, but public opinion turned against the change. The original flag was readopted on 11 April 1997 and has flown unchanged since.
