Turks & Caicos Islands: about the flag

The Turks and Caicos Islands flag carries the Union Jack in the canton and the territory's coat of arms on the fly. The arms feature a conch shell, a lobster, and a cactus, three symbols of the islands' natural life.

The flag was adopted on 7 November 1968, the same year the territory gained its own coat of arms. Before that, the islands flew a Blue Ensign with a different badge, sometimes called the "igloo flag" because of its shape. The 1968 design was modified in 1999, when the coat of arms was enlarged and given a white disc background so it would stand out more clearly.

The current flag was officially adopted on 25 January 1999. It flies on government buildings and is the only flag used on the islands, alongside the Union Jack on official occasions.
