Turkmenistan: about the flag

Turkmenistan's flag is one of the most detailed national flags in the world. It features a green field with a vertical red stripe near the hoist that contains five carpet guls, traditional designs used in Turkmen rug-making. Below the guls are two crossed olive branches, a symbol of peace.

The green field stands for the country's vast deserts and its Islamic heritage. The red stripe represents the blood of those who died for independence. The five guls each represent a different Turkmen tribe: Teke, Yomut, Arsary, Chowdur, and Saryk. In the upper corner, a white crescent moon sits beside five white stars. The crescent is a symbol of Islam and a bright future. The five stars represent the five regions of Turkmenistan and, according to some interpretations, the five pillars of Islam.

The flag was originally adopted on 27 September 1992, and a modified version with a different ratio was adopted on 23 January 2001. State Flag Day is celebrated on 18 May.
