Türkiye: about the flag

The Turkish flag has a long history that reaches back to the Ottoman Empire. The white crescent and star on a red field appeared on Ottoman flags in the late 18th or early 19th century, and the basic form was established in 1844. The flag was officially adopted on 29 May 1936, thirteen years after the Republic of Turkey was founded.

The red field stands for the blood of soldiers who died for the country. The crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam and appear on many flags in the region. One popular story says the flag represents the reflection of the moon and a star in a pool of blood, but historians do not agree on the origin of the symbols.

The flag is called the al sancak, meaning the red banner. It is flown on government buildings and at schools across Turkey.
