Tunisia: about the flag
Tunisia's flag is one of the oldest national flags still in use, with its design dating back to 1831. It was created by Hussein II Bey, the ruler of Tunisia, after the Battle of Navarino in 1827. Tunisia was the first Ottoman province to have its own distinctive flag.
The flag has a red field with a white circle in the center. Inside the circle is a red crescent moon and a red five-pointed star. The crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam and are also associated with the Ottoman Empire, which ruled Tunisia for centuries. The red field represents the blood shed by martyrs in the struggle for freedom. The white circle is said to represent the sun and peace.
The flag was legislated in the constitution on 1 June 1959, after Tunisia became a republic. Its exact proportions and design were clarified by a special law in 1999.
