Tonga: about the flag
Tonga's flag is one of the oldest in the Pacific, adopted in 1875 and enshrined in the nation's constitution that same year. The constitution states that the flag can never be changed. It was designed by King George Tupou I, who wanted a symbol that reflected the country's Christian faith.
The flag has a red field with a white rectangle in the upper left corner containing a red cross. The red field represents the blood of Christ, and the cross is a symbol of Christianity, to which the vast majority of Tongans adhere. An earlier design from the 1840s had a white field with a cross in each corner and the king's initials in the center. The current design was chosen to avoid confusion with the Red Cross flag.
The flag was officially adopted on 4 November 1875, the same day the constitution was promulgated. It has flown unchanged ever since.
