Tokelau: about the flag
Tokelau adopted its own flag in 2009, before that it used the flag of New Zealand, of which it is a dependent territory. The design was chosen through a competition and approved by Tokelau's parliament, the General Fono, in 2008.
The flag has a blue field with a yellow Tokelauan canoe sailing toward the Southern Cross, represented by four white stars. The canoe symbolizes Tokelau's journey toward finding the best governance structure for its people. The Southern Cross is a navigational aid, representing guidance and the importance of religion in Tokelauan culture. The blue field stands for the Pacific Ocean. The four stars represent the three main atolls of Tokelau and Swains Island, which is claimed by Tokelau but administered by the United States.
The flag was officially presented to Tokelau's leader on 7 September 2009.
