Togo: about the flag

Togo's flag was designed by Paul Ahyi, a Togolese artist who studied in Paris and graduated from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in 1959. He returned home the following year and designed the flag just before the country's independence.

The flag has five horizontal stripes of green and yellow, with a red square in the upper left corner containing a white five-pointed star. The green represents the forests, agriculture, and hope. The yellow stands for the country's mineral wealth and the savannah. The red square is for the blood shed in the struggle for independence, and the white star symbolizes life, purity, dignity, and independence. The design uses the Pan-African colors of green, yellow, and red.

The flag was adopted on 27 April 1960, the day Togo proclaimed its independence from France. It has remained unchanged since.
