Timor-Leste: about the flag

Timor-Leste's flag was first raised on 28 November 1975, when the country unilaterally declared independence from Portugal. Nine days later, Indonesia invaded and occupied the territory. The flag was banned for the next 24 years, but it became a powerful symbol of resistance.

The flag has a red field with a yellow triangle and a black triangle at the hoist. Inside the black triangle is a white five-pointed star. The black represents the more than four centuries of colonial repression that had to be overcome. The yellow stands for the wealth of the country and the traces of colonialism. The red is for the blood shed by the people. The white star is "the light that guides" toward a better future.

The flag was officially readopted on 20 May 2002, when Timor-Leste became a fully sovereign nation. It is flown on government buildings and at schools across the country.
