Thailand: about the flag

Thailand's flag is called the Thong Trairong, meaning "tricolor flag," and it was adopted in 1917 during the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). The king introduced the design partly to modernize the kingdom's image during World War I and partly to avoid confusion with other flags that used a white elephant on a red field.

The flag has five horizontal stripes: red, white, blue, white, and red. The central blue stripe is twice as wide as the others. Red stands for the Thai people and the land. White represents religion, specifically Buddhism, the faith of the vast majority of Thais. Blue symbolizes the monarchy. The tricolor design was also chosen to echo the flags of the Allied powers, signaling Thailand's diplomatic alignment with the West at the time.

The flag is flown daily at schools and government buildings across the country. It is a visual expression of the Thai motto: "Nation, Religion, Monarchy."
