Tanzania: about the flag

Tanzania's flag was born from a marriage of two nations. In 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form Tanzania, and the new flag combined elements of both countries' previous banners. The green and black came from Tanganyika's flag, and the blue and black came from Zanzibar's.

The flag is divided diagonally by a black band with yellow edges. The green upper triangle represents the land and agriculture. The blue lower triangle stands for the Indian Ocean and the lakes that dot the country. The black band is for the people of Tanzania, and the yellow edges represent the country's mineral wealth. The design was chosen to symbolize the unity of the new nation.

The flag was officially adopted on 30 June 1964, just months after the union was formed. It has flown unchanged ever since.
