Tajikistan: about the flag

Tajikistan was the last former Soviet republic to adopt a new flag after independence, waiting until November 1992. The design was created by Zuhur Habibullaev, an artist and architect who also designed the country's coat of arms.

The flag has three horizontal stripes of red, white, and green, with the white stripe slightly wider than the others. In the center sits a golden crown topped by an arc of seven stars. The red stands for the unity of the nation and the blood of those who fought for freedom. The white represents purity, cotton, and the country's snowy mountains. The green symbolizes the fertile valleys and Islam. The crown is a reference to the ancient Tajik kingdom and the seven stars are said to represent the seven regions of the country.

The flag was adopted on 24 November 1992, and that date is now celebrated as National Flag Day.
