Syria: about the flag

Syria's flag has changed more times than most, and its current design is actually a return to an older one. After the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024, the country readopted the "independence flag" — green, white, and black stripes with three red stars in the center — which was first used in the 1930s during the struggle against French rule.

The green stripe is said to represent the Fatimid dynasty, white the Umayyad dynasty, and black the Abbasid dynasty. The three red stars originally stood for Syria's three main regions, though they were also linked to the three stars on the flag of the short-lived United Arab Republic. The design was formally adopted by the Syrian caretaker government in December 2024 and enshrined in the Constitutional Declaration of 2025.

The flag now flies on government buildings across the country, marking a break from the red-white-black flag that had been in use since 1980.
