Switzerland: about the flag
Switzerland's flag is square, one of only two square national flags in the world; the other belongs to Vatican City. A white cross, its arms a sixth longer than they are wide, stands on a red field.
The white cross on red goes back centuries: Swiss soldiers wore it as a sign of recognition in battle long before it became a national flag. It became the federal symbol after modern Switzerland was founded in 1848, and a federal decree of 1889 fixed its shape in law. The Red Cross emblem is the Swiss flag with its colors reversed, a tribute to Switzerland and to Henry Dunant, the Swiss founder of the movement.
The square version is the flag flown on land. Swiss ships at sea fly a rectangular version of the same design.
