Sweden: about the flag

The Swedish flag is one of the oldest national flags in the world, with the oldest recorded images of a blue cloth with a yellow cross dating from the 16th century. The design is believed to have been inspired by the Danish flag, the Dannebrog, which Sweden's kings would have seen during their many wars with Denmark.

The blue field and yellow cross come from the Swedish coat of arms, which features three golden crowns on a blue shield. The cross represents Christianity, and the Nordic cross design is shared by all the Scandinavian countries. The blue stands for truth and loyalty, and the yellow for generosity and the sun.

The flag was officially adopted on 22 June 1906, after the union with Norway was dissolved. The date is celebrated as Swedish Flag Day. The flag law of 1982 defines its exact proportions and colors.
