Svalbard & Jan Mayen: about the flag
Svalbard and Jan Mayen have no flag of their own. Both are remote Arctic territories of Norway, and the Norwegian flag is the only official flag used there. Svalbard is an archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole, while Jan Mayen is a volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean.
The Norwegian flag, a blue cross with white borders on a red field, flies over the settlements and research stations in both territories. There have been proposals for a distinct flag for Svalbard, but none has been adopted. The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 gives Norway sovereignty over the islands, and the Norwegian flag represents that authority.
If you visit Longyearbyen, the main settlement on Svalbard, you will see the Norwegian flag on official buildings. Jan Mayen has no permanent population, but the Norwegian flag is raised there by the staff of the weather station.
