Suriname: about the flag

Suriname's flag was chosen in a national competition just days before independence from the Netherlands in 1975. The winning design replaced a 1959 flag that had five colored stars on a white field, a design that was seen as emphasizing ethnic divisions.

The flag has five horizontal bands. The green bands at the top and bottom stand for hope and fertility, and for the forests that cover most of the country. The white bands represent peace and justice. The wide red band in the center is for progress and love, and for the blood shed in the struggle for freedom. A large yellow five-pointed star sits in the middle, a symbol of unity among all ethnic groups. The star's yellow light is said to guide the nation toward a golden future.

The flag was legally adopted on 25 November 1975, the day Suriname became independent. It was first raised that day and has not been changed since.
