Sudan: about the flag

Sudan's flag is based on the Arab Revolt flag of World War I, the banner that Sharif Hussein raised against the Ottoman Empire. The same design template appears on the flags of several Arab countries, but Sudan gave the colors its own meanings.

The flag has three horizontal stripes: red, white, and black, with a green triangle at the hoist. Red stands for the struggle for freedom and the blood of martyrs. White represents peace, light, and love. Black recalls the people of Sudan, since the name "Sudan" comes from the Arabic "bilād al-sūdān," meaning "land of the blacks." The green triangle stands for Islam and agriculture. The flag was designed by a graduate of the Khartoum Art Institute, chosen in a competition after the 1969 revolution.

Sudan adopted the flag on 20 May 1970. It replaced an earlier blue-yellow-green tricolor that had flown since independence in 1956.
