St. Vincent & Grenadines: about the flag

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines calls its flag "The Gems," a nod to the three green diamonds arranged in a V at its center. The V stands for Vincent, and the diamonds reflect the many islands that make up the nation.

The flag was designed locally after independence in 1979, but the College of Arms in London added white borders to the diamonds. The blue bands represent the sky and sea. The gold band is for the warmth of the people and the golden sands of the Grenadines. The green is for the lush vegetation and the vitality of the people. The current design replaced an earlier one that had a coat of arms on a breadfruit leaf.

The flag was officially adopted on 12 October 1985, and it has flown unchanged since.
