St. Pierre & Miquelon: about the flag

Saint Pierre and Miquelon uses the French tricolor as its official flag, as it is an overseas collectivity of France. The tricolor has been in use since 15 February 1794.

An unofficial local flag was designed in 1982 by André Paturel, based on the collectivity's coat of arms. The flag is blue with a yellow ship, said to be the Grande Hermine, the vessel in which Jacques Cartier reached the islands in 1536. The flag also includes three heraldic arms representing settlers from the Basque Country, Brittany, and Normandy. The blue stands for the Atlantic Ocean.

The local flag is used by residents and at cultural events, but the French tricolor is the only official flag and is flown on government buildings.
