St. Lucia: about the flag

Saint Lucia's flag was designed by Dunstan St Omer, a native artist. It was adopted on 1 March 1967, when the island became an associated state of the United Kingdom, and it was retained when Saint Lucia gained full independence on 22 February 1979.

The blue field stands for the sea and the sky. The gold triangle represents the sun and the sand, and the black arrowhead with a white border stands for the island's volcanic origins and its two famous Pitons. The white border is for peace. The triangles are a distinctive feature, pointing upward like the Pitons, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The flag was last modified in 2002. It is flown on government buildings and at sporting events, and Saint Lucia celebrates Independence Day on 22 February.
