St. Kitts & Nevis: about the flag

Saint Kitts and Nevis adopted its flag on 19 September 1983, the day the country gained independence from Britain. The flag was designed by Edrice Liburd, who won a national competition.

The flag has a green triangle at the hoist and a red triangle at the fly, separated by a black diagonal band with a yellow border. Two white stars sit on the black band. Green stands for the fertile land, red for the struggle from slavery through colonialism to independence, black for the African heritage of the people, and yellow for the sun. The two stars represent the two islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and hope for a bright future.

The flag was first raised at midnight on 18–19 September 1983. It is flown on government buildings and at official events.
