St. Helena: about the flag
Saint Helena's flag was adopted on 4 October 1984, to mark the 150th anniversary of the island becoming a Crown Colony. It is a British Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and the island's shield on the fly.
The shield shows a rocky coastline with a three-masted sailing ship, recalling the island's discovery and its role as a stopover for ships. Above the ship is a plover, a bird found only on Saint Helena. The flag is used by the island's government and flies on public buildings.
Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha, which are part of the same territory, adopted their own flags in 2013 and 2002. The French flag flies at Longwood House, Napoleon's former residence, and at his tomb.
