St. Barthélemy: about the flag
Saint Barthélemy uses the French tricolor as its official flag, as it is an overseas collectivity of France. The tricolor has been in use since 15 February 1794, the date associated with the French flag's adoption.
An unofficial local flag also exists, showing the coat of arms of Saint Barthélemy on a white field. The coat of arms has three gold fleurs-de-lis on a blue background, a white band with a red cross, and two pelicans on a red background. The fleurs-de-lis recall the French monarchy, and the pelicans are a local symbol. The coat of arms was designed in the 20th century, and the flag is used by some residents and at local events.
The French tricolor is the only official flag on the island and is flown on government buildings.
