Sri Lanka: about the flag

Sri Lanka's flag is known as the Lion Flag, and the lion symbol goes back over 2,000 years to the legend of Prince Vijaya, the island's first recorded king. The flag was designed in 1948 by a committee led by Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake, and it was based on the banner of the last kingdom of Kandy.

The gold lion holds a sword in its right forepaw and stands on a crimson field. Four golden bo leaves in the corners represent the four Buddhist virtues: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. Two vertical stripes at the hoist, green and orange, were added to represent the Muslim and Tamil communities. The yellow border around the whole flag stands for unity.

The flag was adopted on 22 May 1972, when Ceylon became the Republic of Sri Lanka. The design was modified in 1953 and again in 1972. It is flown on government buildings and at schools across the island.
