Spain: about the flag

Spain's flag was chosen by King Carlos III in 1785, but not for the reason you might think. He wanted a naval ensign that was easy to tell apart from the flags of other countries at sea. The red and yellow stripes were more visible from a distance than the white flag Spain had used before.

The red bands stand for courage and the blood shed by Spanish soldiers. The yellow band, which is twice as wide as the red ones, represents the sun, gold, and the wealth of the Spanish empire. The coat of arms near the hoist shows the castles of Castile, the lion of León, the red and yellow stripes of Aragon, the chains of Navarre, and a pomegranate for Granada. The pillars of Hercules flank the shield with the motto "Plus Ultra" — "Further Beyond."

The flag became the national flag in 1843. The current design is defined in the 1978 Constitution. Spain celebrates Flag Day on 15 May.
