South Sudan: about the flag

South Sudan's flag was first hoisted in 2005, six years before the country became independent. It was the banner of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, the rebel group that fought for decades against the government in Khartoum.

The flag has three horizontal stripes of black, red, and green, separated by thin white lines. A blue triangle at the hoist contains a gold star. Black stands for the people of South Sudan, red for the blood shed in the struggle for freedom, green for the land, white for peace, blue for the waters of the Nile, and the gold star for unity. The design resembles the flag of Kenya.

South Sudan adopted the flag on 9 July 2005, after the peace agreement that ended the civil war. It became the national flag of the world's newest country on 9 July 2011. It is one of only two national flags with six colors.
