South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands: about the flag

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands has its own flag, granted in 1985 when the territory was created from a dependency of the Falkland Islands. Before that, the islands flew the Falkland Islands flag.

The flag is a British Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and the territory's coat of arms on the fly. The shield shows a lion holding a torch, representing the United Kingdom and discovery. The blue and white background comes from the coat of arms of Captain James Cook, who discovered the islands in 1775. Two reindeer support the shield, and below it is the motto "Leo Terram Propriam Protegat" — "Let the Lion Protect its Own Land."

The flag was granted on 3 October 1985. The original design placed the arms in a white disc, but this was changed to the current larger version between 1999 and 2002.
