Somalia: about the flag

Somalia's flag was designed by Mohammed Awale Liban, who wanted it to resemble the flag of the United Nations, the organization that had administered the territory. The light blue field and white star were chosen to show gratitude and to stand apart from the flags of neighboring countries.

The five points of the white star stand for the five regions where ethnic Somalis live: Italian Somaliland, British Somaliland, French Somaliland, the Ogaden, and the Northern Frontier District. The light blue field is said to represent the sky and the Indian Ocean, though it was originally inspired by the UN flag.

The flag was adopted on 12 October 1954, during the UN trusteeship period, and it became the national flag when Somalia gained independence on 1 July 1960. It was first raised in Hargeisa. Somalia celebrates Flag Day on 12 October.
