Solomon Islands: about the flag

The Solomon Islands flag was chosen in a competition held in 1977, as the country prepared for independence from Britain. The winning design replaced the British Blue Ensign that had flown over the protectorate since 1893.

The flag is divided diagonally by a thin yellow stripe. The upper triangle is blue, for the ocean that surrounds the islands. The lower triangle is green, for the land and its vegetation. The yellow stripe stands for sunshine. Five white stars in the upper hoist represent the five main island groups: Choiseul, New Georgia, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, and Malaita. The stars are arranged in a diagonal pattern that echoes the Southern Cross.

The flag was officially adopted on 18 November 1977, eight months before independence. It was first raised on that day and has flown unchanged ever since.
