Slovenia: about the flag

Slovenia's flag was first raised by a group of students in Vienna in March 1848, during the revolutions that swept across Europe. They hung a white-blue-red tricolor out of a window, and the colors have been a symbol of Slovene identity ever since.

The white, blue, and red are Pan-Slavic colors, adopted during the 19th-century movement to unite Slavic peoples. The coat of arms near the hoist shows a white three-peaked mountain representing Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak, above two wavy blue lines for the sea and rivers. Three golden six-pointed stars in an inverted triangle come from the coat of arms of the Counts of Celje, a powerful medieval Slovene dynasty.

The flag was formally adopted on 24 June 1991, when Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia. It was first hoisted on 26 June 1991 in Ljubljana's Republic Square. Slovenia celebrates 7 April as its national flag day.
