Slovakia: about the flag

Slovakia's flag was adopted by the country's constitution, which came into force on 3 September 1992, shortly before Czechoslovakia split into two nations. The tricolor of white, blue, and red had been used by Slovaks since the revolutionary year of 1848.

The white, blue, and red are Pan-Slavic colors, shared with Russia, Serbia, and other Slavic nations. The white band represents peace and honesty. The blue stands for truth and loyalty. The red is for courage and the blood shed for freedom. The coat of arms near the hoist shows a red shield with a white double cross on three blue hills, a symbol of Slovak Christianity and the country's mountains.

The flag without the coat of arms was adopted on 1 March 1990, within Czechoslovakia. The coat of arms was added on 3 September 1992 to distinguish the flag from Russia's. A special law describing the flag's details followed in February 1993.
