Singapore: about the flag

Singapore's flag was unveiled on 3 December 1959, when the island became self-governing within the British Empire. It replaced the Union Jack, which had flown over Singapore for nearly 140 years. The design was created by a committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Toh Chin Chye.

The flag has two equal horizontal sections, red above white. The red stands for universal brotherhood and equality of man. The white symbolizes purity and virtue. A white crescent moon in the upper left represents a young nation on the ascendant. Five white stars in a circle depict Singapore's ideals: democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.

The flag was officially adopted as the national flag when Singapore became independent on 9 August 1965. It is flown on government buildings and at National Day celebrations each August.
