Sierra Leone: about the flag

Sierra Leone's flag was adopted on 27 April 1961, the day the country gained independence from Britain. It replaced the British Blue Ensign, which had flown over the colony since 1808.

The flag has three horizontal bands: green, white, and blue. The green stands for the country's agriculture, mountains, and natural resources. The white band represents unity and justice. The blue is for the Atlantic Ocean and the harbor of Freetown, the capital. The design was probably derived from the coat of arms granted in 1960, which also used these colors.

The flag has remained unchanged since independence. It flies on government buildings and at official events across the country.
