Seychelles: about the flag

Seychelles has one of the most colorful flags in the world, with five oblique bands radiating from the lower hoist corner. The flag was adopted on 18 June 1996, under a new multiparty constitution, replacing a red, white, and green design used from 1977.

The blue band stands for the sky and the sea that surrounds the islands. Yellow is for the sun, which gives light and life. Red symbolizes the people and their determination to work for the future in unity and love. White represents social justice and harmony. Green depicts the land and the natural environment.

The original flag, adopted at independence in 1976, had alternating blue and red triangles separated by a white diagonal cross. The current flag was first hoisted on 18 June 1996, and the date is celebrated as Flag Day.
