Senegal: about the flag

Senegal's flag was adopted on 20 August 1960, shortly after the country became independent from France. Its origins lie in the flag of the Mali Federation, which Senegal briefly formed with Mali. That federation's flag had a black human figure called a kanaga in the center.

The flag uses the Pan-African colors: green, yellow, and red. Green stands for hope and the country's agriculture. Yellow represents the wealth brought by the land and the arts. Red recalls the blood shed in the struggle for independence. A green five-pointed star sits at the center, a symbol of unity and hope for the future.

The flag replaced the French tricolor and has remained unchanged since 1960. It flies on government buildings and at official events across Senegal.
